Cuban Trainer Leads Namibian Athletics Team to IV Commonwealth Youth Games

NAMIBIA, 1st September 2011.- The Cuban athletics trainer, Bárbara Fernández Veitía, travelling with the Namibian team to the IV Commonwealth Youth Games taking place on the Isle of Man, United Kingdom, was seen off today with her team and the rest of the delegation by the president of Namibia Hifikepunye Pohamba. The ceremony was organized by the State House, for the national athletes that will participate in the Games.

Honorable Kazenambo Kazenambo, Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, presented the trainer and her team to the highest national authorities, while reviewing and expressing the importance Namibia awards to the Cuban sports collaboration. Thanks to which, the country has significantly increased its medal harvest in competitions of this domain.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba, took advantage of the moment to mention the strong fraternal bonds that unite Cuba and Namibia, forged “since the time of the Independence struggle” he said. He expressed his gratitude and that of his people to Cuba, for the past and the present cooperation, not only in sports, but in other important sectors of the economy.

At present, there are two Cuban trainers rendering their service and sharing their knowledge for the benefit of the Namibian sport. The above mentioned Bárbara Fernández Veitía in athletics and the already renowned and award winner in Southern Africa Luis Forcelledo Paz, in wrestling. He recently participated in two prestigious events in South Africa, where he lead an inexperienced team of eight young Namibians, who achieved a harvest of nine gold medals, five silver medals and one bronze medal.

Taking into account the award winning results of the Cuban trainers, the Namibian Government has already requested that the contracts of both trainers be extended.
