Relaunch of Association of Graduates from Cuban Universities held in Kingston

JAMAICA, August 30, 2011.- Last Sunday, August 28, at the headquarters of the Cuban Embassy, a friendly meeting was held with Jamaicans who graduated in Cuba, an opportunity in which the relevant Association of Graduates was relaunched. The meeting was attended by graduates from different fields of study, including, Medicine, Physical Education and sports, Microbiology, among others.
The ceremony was presided over by the Chief of the Cuban State Mission, Ambassador Yuri Gala Lopez, as well as by Dr. Lorenzo Gordon, Mrs. Delita McAllum, Mrs. Mrs. Elinor Sherlock, and other members of the Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association (Kingston Chapter).

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Yuri Gala López highlighted the significance of the scholarship program that Cuba has kept ongoing with this Caribbean nation for years. The Cuban diplomat added that this represents a useful and positive contribution to the efforts Jamaica is making in terms of human resources development.
Mrs. McCallum, who is also an officer at the Jamaican Chancery, Dr. Gordon, a physician who graduated in Cuba, and Mrs. Elinor Sherlock, former Jamaican Ambassador to Cuba and current Director of Protocol in the Office of the Prime Minister, also spoke on behalf of Jamaica.
Present, on behalf of the Cuban State Mission were, Third Secretary Yaima Gonzalez and comrade Andres Acosta, who gave information of interest to the graduates, as well as Dr. Caridad Carbo, Chief of the Cuban Medical Brigade, Comrade Gumersindo Cruz, Head of the Educational Brigade.
During the friendly dialogue with the above mentioned graduates, the latter reiterated their profound gratitude to the Cuban government and people for having given them the opportunity of pursuing free university courses. Minutes before the end of the ceremony, a graduate read an important statement of solidarity and support with our country.
Afterwards, the attendees savoured typical dishes of both countries’ cuisine, and danced to the rhythm of the Cuban music. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Jamaica)
