Culture to Form New Ties Between Suriname and Cuba SURINAME, December 30, 2012.- Cultural exchange will be the new trump card to familiarize Suriname to Cubans, reason why Cuban musicians are now visiting Suriname. Both countries have agreed to add culture to the already existing political cooperation. ‘We think that the ties between the two countries shouldn’t only be defined politically, so we’ve invited this delegation to our country,’ Ike Antonius, Suriname’s Ambassador in Cuba says. The President’s Office cooperated with the Surinamese mission in Cuba and the Cuban Ministry of Culture to get the exchange off the ground. Antonius explains that the music groups are but a small part of a larger delegation invited to Suriname. There is also a media group, which is collecting shots for Cuban national television. ‘They have daily reports, so Suriname is highlighted every day on Cuban television,’ the Ambassador says. Up till now, Cuba had only old and poorly shot impressions of Suriname. The new material will have to improve Cuba’s familiarity with Suriname. The crew will produce a documentary about Suriname, not only focusing on culture but also on the economy. They have visited Kwamalasamutu and Asidonhopo were a cultural exchange took place. The Cuban musicians have had many performances so far, including in Ons Erf, CCS and at Valliantsplein in front of Telesur. Several workshops have been held and exchange meetings with Surinamese musicians have been scheduled. The Cuban visitors have been specially certified by the Cuban Ministry of Culture to act as Cultural ambassadors. (Cubaminrex/Embacuba Brazil)
