European Parliament Vice President Says Cuba is not a Terrorist Country

BELGICA, January 6, 2010 -- The Vice President of the European Parliament Miguel Ángel Martínez said Tuesday that Cuba should not be considered a country that sponsors terrorism. He criticized the United States for having included Cuba on the list of countries whose nationals will have to undergo further screening at airports on flights bound for the US.

The Spanish diplomat said that he understands that all governments have the responsibility of protecting their citizens but he said that any antiterrorist policy should be based on fact rather than political suspicion; and that in this case, these regulations will be affecting citizens of a country with a long history in fighting terrorism.

Martinez said that the present US administration is the most reactionary ever in the history of the United States. He said the list issued by the State Department is arbitrary and that for some of the countries included there is little justification.

Martinez recalled the case of the Cuban Five, five men who have been imprisoned in the United States for over 11 years, for no less than preventing terrorist acts from being committed against their country. (Cubaminrex - RHC)
