Immigrants inhumanely treated in 180 European prisons

PERU.  March 12, 2010.—On Monday, representatives of social and immigration organizations came together outside the Italian embassy in this capital to protest against violations of immigrants’ rights and abuses in most of the European Union nations.

The demonstration was convened by the Committee of Peruvians Abroad and the Political-Social Coordinating Committee to demand respect for immigrants’ basic rights and to condemn increasing anti-immigration policies. In 2008, the European Council passed regulations in violation of international law and implemented legislation, courts and prisons for irregular immigrants.

According to the communiqué signed by the organizations taking part in the protest, the European Union currently has 180 prisons for the detention of irregular immigrants. The treatment meted out to the close to 100,000 inmates is inhumane, even though their only crime is that their papers have irregularities.

The demonstration was also an opportunity for members of social and immigration organizations to get to know each other, exchange information, strengthen the struggle for the rights of all migrants, and to expose European migratory crimes.

The protest also supported recent immigrant demonstrations in Spain, Italy, Greece and France. (Cubaminrex – Granma)
