Antonio Maceo and Ernesto Che Guevara: Distant in Time, United in History
Each June 14th, the Cuban people remember the birth of two of the country´s most important historic figures: Antonio Maceo and Ernesto Che Guevara. For this reason this date is a privileged moment in Cuban history.
With a difference of over 50 years between both leaders, they had the same objective which was, above any difficulties and risks: to achieve the definitive and self determination of the Cuban people.
In Che´s particular case, although Cuba was not his place of birth, his courage and dedication was directed at the island´s liberation. The Cuban people consider the legendary guerrilla as one of their own.
Antonio Maceo´s dedication to the country´s national emancipation from Spanish colonialism, his feat and heroic gestures, his character and qualities as a leader influenced by his family formation, shaped the principles and ideals that accompanied him for the rest of his life.
The economic needs of his family did not make education a priority, although this did not mean that Antonio and his brothers were not educated by their parents. Antonio, as well as his older brother was responsible for transporting merchandise towards the city of Santiago de Cuba, which had economic benefits for the family.
Che offered his life for the defense of humanity´s most just and noble ideas, with profound convictions. He was also formed in a family environment full of love, peace and respect.
His parents’ dedication came at a very early age due to his severe asthma. Che was constantly moving from one home to another aimed at finding a better environment for his illness.
From a very early age, Che was characterized as being rebel, daring and bold; overcoming his limitations provoked by his asthma.
His successive trips through different countries in the American continent contributed to his spiritual richness. Coming in contact with sick, poor and oppressed people, gave him not only professional experience, but also sensitivity towards them, creating a commitment that defined him as a soldier of America.
Both Antonio Maceo and Ernesto Che Guevara had a significant role in the armed struggle: each one in their time dedicated themselves for the freedom of humanity.
History units them in memory and having been, within the extensive list of Cuban combatants, two that stood out in history and dedicated their lives in favor of independence. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
