China to Help Cuba Update Customs Technology

CUBA, September 9th, 2010.- Cuba and China signed a contract today in Beijing for the update of Cuba’s Customs technology to improve services and strengthen the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking.

Worth US$1.48 million, the project includes the delivery by China of X-ray inspection equipment, explosive and drug detectors and components of closed-circuit television.

Regarding the importance of the deal, Cuba’s General Customs vice-chief William Perez Gonzalez told Prensa Latina the agreement will make it possible to achieve a balance between facilitation and control of the growing activity through the country’s gateways.

With the new technology, intranet equipment and computers will be updated and in turn the security at the gateways will be enhanced.

The deal was signed by Odette Saez Sitchao, EMIAT’s business manager and Ma Jiang, vice president of the company executing the project China Light Industrial Corporation for Foreign Economic&Technical Cooperation.

Present in the signing ceremony were the Cuban ambassador to China Carlos Miguel Pereira, other executives of the aforementioned company and of NUCTECH, the producer of most of the equipment included in the contract. (Cubaminrex – ACN)
