Cuba Continues Supporting Health System in Haiti
CUBA, May 17, 2010. Cuba continues to develop several actions as part of a Program to Rebuild and Strengthen the Haitian Health System.
According to the Coordination Group of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti, works are underway in 23 facilities given to Cuba to be used as Reference Community Hospitals.
In addition, eight out of ten Comprehensive Diagnosis Centers —today Reference Community Hospitals— have been built as part of a joint effort by Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti and the ones in Grand Riviere du Nord and Cayes Jacmel will soon be finished.
The Cuban health specialists are providing assistance in 11 new hospitals and they will soon do it in another two in Quartier Morin and Mainet.
Cuba has also equipped 30 Rehabilitation Centers that are part of the services provided by the Reference Community Hospitals.
In order to contribute to the implementation of the Program to Rebuild and Strengthen the Haitian Health System, 1,176 Cuban health professionals as well as graduates and students from the Havana-based Latin American School of Medicine from 23 countries —mainly from Latin America and the Caribbean but also from Mali, Nigeria, India and the United States— are working in Haiti.
