Guatemala Declares First ¨Illiterate-Free Zone¨ with Cuban Teaching Methods
CUBA, January 18th, 2010. - Guatemala, a country with an illiteracy rate of 21 percent of the population, has been using the Cuban Literacy Brigade Method called ¨Yes, I Can¨ to teach its citizens to read and write. 550 Guatemalan citizens who are now literate will receive their diplomas in San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán in the Central Department of El Progreso.
The Mayor, Jeannete Ordóñez, praised the Cuban consultants for their assistance. The goal of the ¨Yes I Can¨ literacy program is to teach 10,000 Guatemalans to read and write and see a rise in the number of literate citizens to 100,000 this year. (Cubaminrex - RHC)
