Approximately 855 Cuban Doctors Working in Haiti to Control Cholera Epidemic.

CUBA, October 28, 2010.-  At least 855 Cuban doctors continue working in Haiti to control the cholera epidemic that has taken the lives of 291 people, according to the representative from the Epidemiology Laboratory Investigation section of the public health ministry.

The director of the Cuban Medical Mission in Haiti, Lorenzo Somarriba, told Telesur that the situation in Haiti could be classified as ¨an extremely complex epidemic,¨ that could continue to get worse if necessary measures are not taken.

When referring to the recent declarations of Haitian President René Preval, who asserted that the disease was imported, Somarriba said that his mission did not include ¨looking for the cause,¨ but rather treating patients.

However, he did say that it is very likely that the contamination of the Artibonit river that crosses the Central-Northern region of the country could have caused the outbreak. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
