Cuban Medical Doctors Awarded in China.
CHINA, October 2, 2010.- Cuban Drs. Gloria Rodriguez and Luis Herrera were granted the Friendship Prize, an award given by the Chinese Government to either institutions or individuals who have made a contribution to the development of that country.
Rodriguez has been offering his services since 2007 in the Cuban-Chinese eye clinic at the city of Hebei, in Henan province, and Herrera is the director of the Havana Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.
The award was given to 50 professionals from 16 countries, in a ceremony in which Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Dejiang said that the knowledge of foreign specialists is a valuable contribution to the modernization of China.
Following the awards ceremony, the two Cuban doctors held a meeting with the head of the Chinese government, Wen Jiabao, who also congratulated them and thanked them for their cooperation.
This annual acknowledgement was given for the first time in 1991 and since then it has been granted to 1,149 experts from 60 nations. In the case of Cuba, it was previously granted to Patricia Sierra in 2004; and to Lemur Lauzán in 2008, who are both part of the staff at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Havana.
