Laying of Underwater Cable between Cuba and Venezuela to Begin on Saturday-

CUBA, January 18th, 2011.- The laying of the underwater optic fiber cable between Cuba and Venezuela, which will also include Jamaica, will begin on January 22.

Wilfredo Morales, president of Gran Caribe Telecommunications (TGC) announced that the cable will go from the Camuri beaches, in the Venezuelan state of Vargas, to Siboney, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, reports Juventud Rebelde newspaper.

Morales affirmed that the main objective is to take this cable throuout all the Caribbean. He mentioned that this is the first time two nations join forces to carry out such important plan, considering it is usually done by private enterprises in search of profits.

He expressed his joy for directing TGC by the side of Cubans, which shows that the program will not be lead in accordance to the economic interests of any State, and referred to the importance of this cable for Cuba, which is under the US economic blockade that limits its international communications.

Cuban TGC vice president Waldo Reboredo Arroyo also noted the socioeconomic significance of this cable (630 km long), which will be laid from the French ship Ile de Batz, under the commando of Captain Philipe Cabrera.

Reboredo affirmed that this joint program counters the 50 year-long blockade imposed against Cuba, and allows improving communications with the rest of the world.

Ile de Batz is scheduled to arrive with the cable in Siboney, by February 8, and to depart, from the Aguadores beach, to Jamaica by February 11, in order to install the second segment of the cable in Ocho Rios, where the cable will be finally installed by February 14.

The underwater section of the cable will be tested during March, April and May, whereas the terrestrial will be tested during June, so as to start offering services to the Cuban Enterprise, ETECSA, and the Venezuelan CANTV.
