Mexican Authorities Recognize Cuban Ophthalmological Assistance.
CUBA, May 9, 2011.- The Legislative Congress of the Mexican state of Zacatecas granted a diploma to Cuba in recognition of the ophthalmological services offered to their people through the free eye-care program ‘Operation Miracle’.
Cuba’s consul Luis Quitantes received the distinction on behalf of the Caribbean country, whose specialists have performed 4,800 surgeries that have allowed people of that region to improve or recover their sight.
During the ceremony, parliamentarian Blas Avalos said the diploma is, in the first place, for the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who “continues to write and warn humanity about the alternatives to save the Earth.”
He added that at the Republica de Cuba hospital, in the neighboring city of Saltillo, in the state of Coahuila —where the people of Zacatecas have been receiving ophthalmological services since its inauguration in 2007—, nearly 56,000 ophthalmological consultations have been offered by Cuban specialists.
Operation Miracle is a free eye-care program for low-income people created at the initiative of Fidel Castro and Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
