Thousands of Guatemalans Improve their Vision Thanks to Cuban Physicians.
CUBA, June 27, 2011.- Operation Miracle in Guatemala, in charge of Cuban voluntary workers, carried out 1,563 surgeries in the first six months of this year on patients suffering from cataract. Katia Robledo, national coordinator of this mission in Guatemala, explained that this kind of suffering is very common among the humble, who receive the treatment free of charge, the Prensa Latina news agency reported. These surgeries were carried out by Cuban specialists working in the four clinics of Operation Miracle in the Central American nation, where in six years of work they accumulate 8,998 cases since the opening of the first center. These ophthalmologists have carried out -with laser- 3,350 surgeries on patients with cataract, pointed out the specialist, as well as over 800 surgeries on patients suffering from glaucoma and more than 5,000 on patients suffering from other pathologies. In recent statements to the Cubavision Internacional television channel, Dr. Robledo informed that, in Guatemala, Operation Miracle has the hospitals Jose Joaquin Palma (en la capital), José Marti (Jalapa), Carlos J. Finlay (San Marcos) and Laura Martinez Carvajal (Escuintla). Each facility has two surgeons, a lab technician, an optometrist, a specialist of internal medicine and five nurses, in addition to the staff of statistics and drugstore.
