International Colloquium Extols Fidel Castro's Struggle for Global Justice

CUBA, November 30, 2006.- World Personalities from around the world stressed the role of Fidel Castro in the international struggle for global justice, during the Colloquium "Memory and future: Cuba and Fidel" underway in Havana, as part of celebrations organized by the Guayasamín Foundation to mark the 80th birthday of Cuban President Fidel Castro.

Speaking in the event, Spanish journalist and writer Monserrat Poncha highlighted the crucial role of Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution in the promotion of global justice. "Cuba is a balanced society in fields of culture, education and healthcare," said Monserrat.

She also sent a message of support to the Five Cuban antiterrorist fighters held in US jails for fighting terrorism: Ramon Labanino, Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez.

Argentinean social activist Hebe de Bonafini, leader of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, underscored the role played by the Cuban leader in promoting education as the best way to achieve independence.

The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo is an organization that emerged during the last Argentinean military dictatorship with the aim of finding their disappeared children, who were arrested during that period. She denounced the conspiracy between the Argentinean military and the American administration in the past to prevent a revolution in her country by means of torture, the destruction of homes, books and schools.

A panel of Cuban professors briefed the audience on the latest changes in the Cuban education system and the positive impact of the literacy program "Yes I Can", implemented in several Latin American countries.

In addition, Chilean writer Volodia Teittelboim said the Latin American left-wing movement is becoming stronger, and he thanked Fidel Castro for his contributions in this sense.

The colloquium is working in three different panels that focus on highly topical subjects such as science, healthcare, education, democracy, equality and social justice. (Cubaminrex-CNA)
