Honorary doctorate conferred on Fidel CUBA, December 3, 2009.- During its 45th anniversary celebrations yesterday, the José Antonio Echeverría University City (CUJAE) awarded an honorary doctorate to the leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz. José Ramón Fernández, vice president of the Council of Ministers, received the award from Alicia Alonso Becerra, rector of the institution, on behalf of Fidel, "who is a consubstantial part of CUJAE’s history." Alonso Becerra noted that generations of young people have graduated from the college and made their presence felt in the country’s economic and social development. "Thank you Fidel, for converting into reality the dream of José Antonio Echeverría, for being the forger of the new men and women, for promoting everything that can ennoble the dignity and development of human beings," she affirmed. Miguel Díaz-Canel, member of the Political Bureau and minister of higher education, called on students and workers at the institution to put all their scientific potential into the search for means of increasing productivity and reducing imports. "This is a college that promotes our culture and our sport and which, together with its firm ideology and humanistic action – sets the bases for the modern university to which we aspire," Díaz-Canel emphasized. On this occasion, 10 emeritus professors received the CUJAE 45th Anniversary Plaque for their contribution to the center’s educational work. Present at the event were Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés, member of the Political Bureau and minister of informatics and communications; Jaime Crombet, vice president of the National Assembly of People's Power; Lázara Mercedes López, first secretary of the Communist Party in the capital; and representatives of the accredited diplomatic corps.
