Fidel and Raul: Honorary Delegates to 9th Youth Congress CUBA, Feb 20, 2010. - Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro and President Raul Castro were elected on Friday the first Honorary Delegates to the 9th Congress of the Young Communists League (UJC). During the provincial assembly of the UJC in Sancti-Spiritus, the First Vice-president of the Cuban councils of State and Ministers, Jose Ramón Machado Ventura, pointed out that this is a well-deserved decision, due to the history of the two leaders. Machado Ventura and Esteban Lazo and Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes, also members of the Party’s Politburo, as well as Commander of the Revolution Guillermo Garcia also received the acknowledgement of the UJC’s National Bureau. While participating in the debates, the Party leader described as essential the good performance of the political youth organization to guarantee the fulfilment of their responsibilities in the nation’s political and ideological struggle and economic development. For her part, the First Secretary of the UJC National Committee, Liudmila Alamo, called for immediate actions to solve the problems assessed during the debates held in municipal meetings. In his closing speech, Miguel Acebo, a member of the Central Committee and First Secretary of the Party in Sancti Spiritus, underlined how Cuban youngsters have been in the vanguard since the beginning of the island’s independence wars, and called current generations to continue that example. Los 250 delegates elected Julio Luis Jimenez for the youth organization’s provincial committee, who was until that moment the second secretary of the UJC in the territory. The Sancti-Spiritus meeting inaugurated the provincial assemblies that will be held in the country prior to the UJC Congress, scheduled for April 3-4, which will be attended by some 800 delegates.
