ALBA Countries Condemn Coup in Honduras and Support Manuel Zelaya

CUBA, June 29, 2009. The Extraordinary Presidential Council of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of The Americas (ALBA), currently in session in Nicaragua, condemned the coup against the Honduran government and expressed full support of President Manuel Zelaya.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that his country and his people take side with the Honduran people and that the Latin American past marked by the ruling of dictatorships can not be allowed to return, the Cuban Television reported.

Referring to Fidel Castro’s article “A Suicidal Mistake” about the events in Honduras, which was published today, Chavez reiterated that there is no possible room for any negotiations with the coup supporters, since what they must do is surrender and leave power unconditionally.

Hugo Chavez noted that Venezuela would not invade Honduras because his country respects the sovereignty of the Central American nation.

The host of the ALBA meeting, Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega said they do not want to see bloodshed in Honduras and he announced that Bolivian President Evo Morales would join the gathering on Monday.

President Ortega stressed that the meeting is aimed at returning Zelaya to the presidency of his country, “We can not be satisfied until we see President Manuel Zelaya back in his homeland meeting the task that the Honduran people entrusted him.”

Ecuador’s Rafael Correa backed Honduras´ constitutional president and urged coup supporters to return Zelaya to his post. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said that his country joins its forces and its voice to the ALBA countries to condemn the coup against Manuel Zelaya.

He expressed the full support of the people and the government of Cuba to the Honduran people, convinced that they will get the victory. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
