Argentinean President Condemns Coup d’état in Honduras

HAVANA, Cuba, June 28 (acn) Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner condemned Sunday’s coup d’état in Honduras against the government of President Manuel Zelaya and demanded the re-establishment of democracy in this Central American nation.

The statement by the South American leader was read by journalist Randy Alonso during a special Cuban TV transmission.“I have no doubt that what happened in Honduras is a return to barbarism,” said the Argentinean president after casting her vote in Sunday’s mid-term elections in the city of Río Gallegos, 2,700
kilometers South of Buenos Aires.

“I am deeply concerned about the situation in Honduras that looks like a return to barbarism in our hemisphere,” she said.

Fernandez de Kirchner added that Argentinean Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana is now in touch with other foreign ministers to coordinate actions for the defense of democracy in Honduras.Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was arrested, kidnapped and forcibly taken to Costa Rica by Honduran military forces on Sunday morning.
