OAS to Debate Honduras Crisis Washington, June 30, 2009. The Organization of American Status (OAS) General Assembly is to analyze in this capital Tuesday the political crisis in Honduras, after a coup d''etat against the constitutional President Manuel Zelaya. The OAS debate will take place after the Sunday meeting of the Permanent Council of Ambassadors. It condemned the action carried out by Honduran soldiers and oligarchic sectors against legal order and the State of Law. Participants in the Council unanimously demanded the OAS join the strong international condemnation against the coup organizers and support Zelaya as president of the Latin American nation. Venezuelan ambassador Roy Charderton stressed in the regional organization the situation goes beyond the climate of one country. He recalled previous coup processes against the governments of Guatemala, Chile and Venezuela, and how the OAS kept silent in those sad moments. The OAS general secretary Jose Miguel Insulza called on Monday to multiply actions to re-establish the government of President Zelaya. Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa exhorted the Group of Rio to send a convincing international message of rejection to the military coup in Honduras and support President Zelaya. (Cubaminrex- PL) |
