Obama to Close Guantanamo Jail

Washington, November 17, 2008. The US president elect Barack Obama reiterated that he will close the prison in the US naval base in Guantanamo, southeast Cuba.

"I have said several times during my campaign that I wanted to close Guantanamo and I'll do it," told Obama to CBS news Sunday, in his first TV interview after his victory in November 4's presidential elections

The closing of this controversial detainee center will be the clearest sign of breaking-off between the new government and Bush era, emphasized Obama advisors to the Washington Post news last week.

Several international organizations, governments allied to the White House and more recently five ex US secretaries of State have recommended closing Guantanamo's jail.

Analysts agreed that the biggest challenge is what to do with the hundreds of inmates, some with a record of terrorism.

"The new government will face many legal problems, diplomatic, political and logistic with the closing of the jail and the trial of the most important terrorists," recognized the Post.

The USA has kept Guantanamo Naval Base against the will of Cuban people and government.

Obama also cconfirmed the idea of putting an end to Iraq war that has killed over 4,000 US soldiers since 2003. (Cubaminrex- PL)
