Red Cross Confirms Torture in Guantanamo

CUBA, March 16, 2009. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) wrote a secret report in 2007 stating that the treatment given to terrorism-suspects in CIA's secret prisons under Bush administration "constituted torture," reported the Washington Post this Monday.

The daily cites excerpts from the newly published ICRC report as saying that some U.S. practices amounted to "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment," something that is prohibited by the Geneva conventions.

The report is based on findings by ICRC authorities who met with CIA detainees after being transferred in 2006 to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, located in a territory illegally occupied by the U.S in Cuba.

The ICRC report gave accounts of abuse that included beatings, sleep deprivation, extreme temperatures and, in some cases, waterboarding, or simulating drowning, said the Post.

The American daily said that at least five copies of the ICRC report were distributed to the CIA and top White House officials in 2007. Due to its neutral stance in conflicts, the ICRC did not allowed the publication of the report.

Excerpts of the document were published on Sunday by the New York Review of Books dated April 9 by a journalist who had access to the report. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
