EU Support for US at UNCHR Is a Blunder, Says Cuban Minister of Culture

Madrid, Apr 14 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Minister of Culture Abel Prieto called the European Union co-sponsoring of the US-sponsored resolution at the UN Commission on Human Rights a blunder.

In a news conference with Europa Press, Abel Prieto, who is on a private visit to Madrid, asserted that the EU stance against Cuba constituted a serious error and a backward step.

"That position has proven Europe lacks an independent policy toward Havana and prefers to be servile to Washington," the Minister stressed.

Abel Prieto expressed his disappointment at the EU decision and lamented that powerful nations could not formulate their own policies.

It is incomprehensible that Europe says it is aware of human rights issues but does not condemn the US for abuses at the Guantanamo Naval Base, Abu Ghraib prison and the Iraqi city of Fallujah, the high ranking official noted.

He considered the UNCHR has lost credibility and is controlled by a superpower that imposes its will without justifications.

Prieto mentioned a 500-page document he believed "not even Bush has read, as the US President is not sufficiently literate to do so."

It is an aggressive plan to destroy the Cuban political and economic system, he maintained.

Abel Prieto also spoke about his talks with Spanish Culture Minister Carmen Calvo, and highly praised her willingness to work jointly on several collaborative projects that had been impossible to progress during the mandate of former President Jose Maria Aznar.
