Annan Hopes New Human Rights Council Will Be Just

United Nations, Jun 15, 2006. (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General Kofi Annan expressed his confidence that the new Human Rights Council, founded in April, will operate free of biased, selective policy making.

The 47-strong UN body announced its first session for June 19-30 in Geneva, with officials from 100 countries, replacing the old Human Rights Commission, which was dissolved in large part for unfairly attacking developing countries' domestic policy.

Annan explained the top goal in the reform is to eliminate much criticized practices, such as selectivity and politicization, and to promote and protect basic liberties.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Canadian Louise Arbour, issued a call to set aside narrow-mindedness and work in the interest of the peoples.
