

Cuba Condemns Fuel for Food
GENEVE, June 12, 2007.- Cuba termed as sinister the US idea of producing fuel from foods, while analyzing the report on famine presented at the Human Rights Council in Geneva .
Juan Antonio Fernandez, permanent Cuban representative at the UN in Geneva , stated that Washington 's idea is unethical and politically unacceptable in a world where 850 million people suffer from hunger.
Fernandez recalled that President Fidel Castro has criticized food for fuel with solid arguments in his recent reflections.
The diplomat also talked about a report of Professor Jean Ziegler, Special Rapporteur on the right to food at the HRC, who emphasized Bolivian efforts in eliminating malnutrition and plans implemented by Venezuela to increase food reserves destined for the poorest sectors.
Delegates from Bolivia , Brazil , Uruguay and Ecuador praised the document and spoke out for more decided action at the HRC to support programs of countries that fight starvation. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
