Cuban Vaccination Campaign against the A H1N1 to Conclude on Friday

CUBA, April 29, 2010. Cuba will conclude on Friday the first stage of its vaccination campaign against the A H1N1 influenza virus, and has called citizens who have not received their dose yet to go to health centers in their neighborhood and have it.

Until Friday, 75,000 Cubans included in the most vulnerable groups or people in risk to get complications due to the virus had not received their vaccine yet, the Granma newspaper reports.

The group of people that hasn’t received their dose includes mainly 21,000 moderate and severe asthmatics (degrees II and III) less than 18 years of age, and some 10,000 health workers linked to the treatment of patients with respiratory symptoms.

The National Department of Statistics of the Public Health Ministry announced that, on Wednesday, the number of people vaccinates against the A H1N1 was one 1,048, 368, that is, 93.4 per cent of those planned to receive the vaccine, including the 100% of pregnant women and women who have just given birth.

The provinces of Camagüey and Granma had already concluded the campaign, while Ciego de Ávila (99.2); Sancti Spíritus (99.1); the Isle of Youth special municipality (98.2); and Holguín (98.1) were about to do the same.

Also about to conclude were Santiago de Cuba (96.7); Matanzas (95.8); La Habana (95.6); Pinar del Río (95); Villa Clara, 93,7, y Cienfuegos, 93,4. Ciudad de La Habana (86.5); Guantánamo (87); and Las Tunas (89.5), were below national average.

The second stage of the vaccination campaign will be carried out from May 3rd through the 22nd, during which children between 6 months and nine years of age immunized during the first stage will receive a second dose. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
