

European Demonstrators Back Cuba
BELGIUM, April 29, 2010. Representatives from several European countries staged a rally in this capital to support Cuba, its right to self-determination and the island's sovereignty. Gathered at the Schuman Square, in front of the European Commission (EC) headquarters, delegations from Italy, France, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Portugal, Luxemburg, Denmark and Belgium took part in the demonstration.
In the EC, executive body of the European Union, participants in the rally carried posters with phrases as "Cuba Has the Right to Sovereignty," "Down with the Common Stance," and "Free the Five."
They also flied dozens of Cuban flags, and delivered speeches demanding the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters that have been unfairly imprisoned in the United States for 11 years.
Members of the European Parliament, Takis Hadjigeorgiou (Cyprus), Willy Meyer (Spain), Georgios Toussas (Greece), Jacky Henin (France) and Jo uo Ferreira (Portugal) met with the group.
Ferreira spoke abpout the firm stance by 35 Euro-deputies who voted against an anti-Cuban resolution adopted in the European Parliament on March 11.
According to observers, the demonstration ended on Wednesday night and was a success, due to the strength that European parties and solidarity movements showed. (Cubaminrex- PL)
