Cuban Economists Honor American Nobel Laureates
CUBA, March 4, 2009. The National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba (ANEC) has appointed American professors Robert Mundell and Edmund Phelps as Members of Honor of this organization.
Mundell and Phelps, Nobel laureates on Economy in 1999 and 2007, respectively, received their diplomas as ANEC Members of Honor from the hands of Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya and Cuban First VP Jose Ramon Machado Ventura in front of more than 1000 delegates from 46 countries that are participating in the 11 th International Meeting of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems that is underway in Havana.
The ANEC National Council said that this decision is the result not only of their scientific merits and the numerous honorary doctorates they have received from many universities around the world, but also of their friendship ties with Cuba and their presence in three International Meetings of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems.
After the recognition was made public, Edmund Phelps - in a written message read by his wife, Viviana Phelps - condemned the economic blockade imposed by successive US administrations on Cuba over the last 50 years. He added that it was an honor for him and his wife to participate in this kind of event.
On Tuesday, Robert Mundell gave a lecture on the current World Crisis and International Monetary Systems. (Cubaminrex - ACN)
