SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
“FOR WORLD BALANCE”
January 28-30, 2008

January 28, 2008 will mark the 155th anniversary of the birth of Jose Marti, an exceptional figure in the history of the Americas, whose universal ideas, work and political and social aims make him also a far-reaching world personality.

For several years now, the celebration of this significant date has called together intellectuals, scientists, professors, students, journalists and writers – a broad range of personalities representing the most diverse trends of thought who are identified with common concerns that derive from the problems and challenges faced by humanity in our days.

Consequently, several important international meetings have been held: the First International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” (2003); the International Symposium “JOSE MARTI FOR THE CULTURE OF NATURE” (2004) and the recent International Conference “WITH EVERYONE AND FOR THE WELL-BEING OF ALL” (2005), a trilogy of events that successfully discussed Martí’s ideas and their full validity.

In Marti´s work we find a whole diversity of motivations that allow us to connect it with the best of cultural thinking in Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

With the purpose of further studying and discussing all these topics that derive from Martí’s ideas and continue developing them, the Marti Program, the Jose Marti Cultural Society and the Center for Marti Studies of the Republic of Cuba, under the valuable sponsorship of the UNESCO, the Organization of Iberian American States for Education, Science and Culture, the Cultural Fund of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) and other international entities and organizations, universities, research centers and related institutions call together the Second International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” as part of the activities of the Jose Marti Project for World Solidarity and its World Council of distinguished personalities from all continents.

The following topics will be handled in commissions and panels:
1 – Martí – Poet, writer and journalist
2 – Social and political stature of José Martí
3 – The universality of José Martí
4 – Social imbalance in the world and its effects
5 – The spirituality of José Martí
6 – The environmental outlook in José Martí
7 – Mankind in the face of the global dilemmas
8 – Marti’s vision of our America and the United States
9 – The economic imbalances: consequences and alternatives

The Second International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” will be held at the Havana International Conference Center on January 28, 29 and 30, 2008, on the occasion of Jose Marti´s 155th anniversary.
For the accomplishment of all organizational tasks and both the national and international dissemination of this event, as well as the drafting of the general and scientific programs and various participation forms, a Committee of Honor, an Organizing Committee, an International Preparatory Committee and a Scientific Committee will be timely appointed and their membership informed.

As in the case of its predecessor, the Second International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” will be held under the motto OUR NATION IS HUMANITY, the immortal phrase in which the Apostle and National Hero of Cuba summed up his life-long commitment to the independence of his fatherland, to Latin American and Caribbean integration and to a clearly defined universal projection and vocation.
