Fifth Workshop on Economic Journalism Underway in Cuba

CUBA, May 28, 2009. World crisis complexities and its impact on Cuba is the main topics for those attending the 5th National Workshop on Economic Journalism that closes today in this city.

Journalists and economists from all Cuban provinces discussed in the first day how to increase people’s awareness of the need of saving and producing food, as well as alternatives to help palliate the effects of the world crisis on key sectors of Cuban economy.

A keynote speech by Roberto Campbel, Master in Sciences from the Maximo Gomez University in this city, explained to the delegates the steps taken by Cuba to face of the new challenges, like the rise of milk and rice prices in the world market.

The workshop stressed that the education of the population on economic issues, in an analitical and objective way, has to become one of the goals of the journalists.

Representatives from several entities in this central Cuban province discussed the realities in this area, and its chances to fight the limitations imposed by the current world crisis.

Ciego de Avila, a mainly farming province, has suffered a decrease of over 144 million dollars in the investing process. However, it is implementing initiatives to substitute chemical fertilizers by organic ones, and it is using its land in a more efficient way. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
