Cuban Students Defend a World of Justice and Equity

HAVANA, February 24, 2010. The Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU) opened the 15th UN Model Sessions on February 22 at the Center for Higher University Studies in Havana.

“The role of young people in the discussions of problems and viable solutions related to the complex international scenario that we are living in the 21st century highlights the need to maintain spaces open like the United Nations Model at the University of Havana (HAVMUN),” said General Director of the Cuban Association of the United Nations Carlos Amat Forés.

Amat Forés gave the opening address at the event attended by more than 300 Cuban and foreign representatives. He called on participants to be more demanding and committed to achieving equality in the world.

The opening of the UN Model Session began with the traditional ringing of the replica of the La Demajagua bell that marked the beginning the Cuban War of Independence, and words from University of Havana Historian Dr. Delio Carreras.

Dr. Carreras spoke about the importance of students in the struggle for just causes around the world and the salvation of the planet.

Secretary General of HAVMUN 2010 Oscar Redondo Ramos defended multilateralism and human rights in a context of horrors that engulf the world caused by capitalist countries. He called on the UN to preserve the ideal of justice and equity on which the organization was founded more than 65 years ago. He also paid tribute to Cuban Hero José Martí, the forerunner of Latin American diplomacy and a staunch defender of the ideals of Our America.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by University of Havana President Dr. Gustavo Cobreiro Suárez. Also present were the ambassadors from Venezuela and Palestine, and representatives from several UN bodies.(Cubaminrex- Juventud Rebelde)
