Cuban Troubadour Silvio Rodríguez to Offer a Concert in Ecuador

CUBA, August 6, 2009. Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez had a busy Thursday after his arrival to Ecuador, where he will offer a concert in Guayaquil that will inaugurate celebrations for the bicentennial of that country’s independence.

International news agencies like the Spanish EFE, the French AFP and the German DPA, report the first statements by Rodríguez to the press, his solidarity with nations where there are governments who care about and try to satisfy the needs of the majority by way of policies benefiting the traditionally forgotten.

The author of Ojalá offered a news conference in which he assured that, according to what has been published by several media oulets, he views the process of changes underway in some Latin American countries favorably, with governments linked to the ideology of the left.

"I’m talking about what’s happening in Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela... I totally agree with that", said Rodríguez, who returns to Ecuadorean stages after over 13 years of absence.

The concert will be free, and will take place at the Model Stadium of Guayaquil, with a capacity for 50,000 people, which is now being given the final touches. Organizers had announced that tickets would be sold with enough time in advance, since many people will travel from Quito and other cities to attend the re-encounter with the author of Unicornio azul.

Renowned flutist Niurka González and the Trovarroco group will accompany the troubadour.

Rodríguez was especially invited by Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who will take up his post again on Monday, after his victory in the elections recently held in his country.

Prior to this presentation, Silvio Rodríguez performed for the first time in Asunción, the Paraguayan capital, for thousands of admirers, including that nation’s head of state, Fernando Lugo, in spite of the rain and the cold weather of that day. The concert lasted two hours, and included anthological pieces by the famous artist. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
