Great Performance in Mexico of Grammy Winner Omara Portuondo

CUBA, February 13, 2010. Media outlets described Omara Portuondo’s performance on Thursday at Mexico City’s Metropolitan Theater as “a pleasant evening” and “a superb concert”.

According to Notimex news agency, the mere presence of the Buena Vista Social Club Diva on stage prompted the applause of the public.

During the two-hour concert, Omara, with an artistic career of 60 years, surprised the audience for her sharp high range and for maintaining her strong and melodious voice, Prensa Latina news agency reports.

The Cuban singer delighted her Mexican followers with pieces from her most recent production, including “Gracias,” “Yo vi,” “Adios felicidad,” “Tal vez,” “Tres palabras,” “Drume negrita,” “O que sera,” and “Nuestro amor.” Due to their virtuosity, her accompanying musicians --Swami Jr (seven-string guitar and musical director), Harold Lopez Nussa (piano), Felipe Cabrera (double bass), Andres Coayo (percussion) and Rodney Barreto (drums)-- were also given an ovation.

Omara had Mexican soprano Regina Orozco as a special guest, with whom she interpreted classics like “Amorcito Corazon” and “Cucurrucucu paloma.”

In statements to reporters before her presentation, Omara said she was slated to give a second concert in Leon, Guanajuato. Then, she would return to Cuba and begin, almost immediately, a tour of the United States. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
