Cuban VP Esteban Lazo Highlights Importance of Culture for the Revolution.

CUBA, January 13th, 2011.- Cuban Vice President Esteban Lazo highlighted on Wednesday the importance of culture for the Revolution and reiterated the transcendence of the support and creation of Cuban writers and artists.

Speaking during the National Council of the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC), Lazo commented that the process of discussion of the Draft Guidelines for the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution is yielding a large number of arguments for the necessary updating of the Cuban socialist model.

He added that some 55,000 meetings —almost a third of those scheduled— have taken place in workplaces, schools, neighborhoods and in base organizations of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) and the Young Communist League (UJC).

Granma newspaper reports that the high-ranking official noted that all comments and recommendations are a valuable contribution to the content of the Guidelines and they express the people’s willingness to defend and renovate the socialist experience, which will be reflected during the Sixth Congress of the PCC in April.

“It is very difficult to carry out these transformations if we don’t have the people’s consensus. The Revolution needs your knowledge, your creation and your thoughts because, today more than ever, culture is Revolution,” Lazo pointed out.

Also participating in the meeting were Culture Minister Abel Prieto and the president of the Cuban National Assembly (Parliament), Ricardo Alarcon, as well as Havana Historian Eusebio Leal, UNEAC president Miguel Barnet and the president of the National Council of Cultural Heritage, Margarita Ruiz.
