Friends of Cuba from around the World Highlight Historical Significance of July 26
CUBA, July 28, 2009. Friends of Cuba in all continents, as well as groups of Cubans who work, study or live in different regions of the world, marked on Sunday the 56th anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes garrisons.
During a cultural gala held at the Caracas Municipal Theater attended by the island’s ambassador in Venezuela, Germán Sánchez, the Venezuelan Minister for Women Issues, María León, highlighted the example of Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro, and said that July 26, 1953, illuminated the course to follow by Latin American peoples, Granma newspaper reports.
For his part, Brigadier General Esther (Teté) Puebla, thanked the South American nation for its solidarity with Cuba and pointed out that 40,000 Cuban volunteers are currently working in that country in the spheres of health, education, agriculture and sports, among other sectors.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Spaniards marched in Madrid to demand the end of Washington’s blockade against Cuba, in a demonstration convened by some 30 political and youth organizations and solidarity-with-Cuba groups to mark the historical date, while the Free the Five Committee in the Spanish capital urged US president Barack Obama to carry out an act of justice and release these Cuban antiterrorists.
In Beijing, China, a political meeting gathered Cubans in that Asian country at the island’s diplomatic mission, to pay tribute to the combatants of the July 26 heroic deed. The Chargé d’Affaires in the Chinese capital, Mario Alzugaray, underlined the commitment of the Cuban people to continue putting into practice the ideals of those who offered their lives over half a century ago in their struggle for freedom.
In Chile, on behalf of the Solidarity with Cuba Movement, Reynaldo Lacámara, president of the Chilean Association of Writers (SECH) underlined that, more than five decades later, dignity continues to be the letter of introduction of the Cuban people. During an activity held at the headquarters of the former National Congress, attended by the ambassadors from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Vietnam and Iran, as well as by Chilean political and social personalities, the poet stressed the
validity of the Cuban Revolution and its significance for Latin American peoples, and thanked Cuba for its solidarity with the Chilean people.
The Day of National Rebelliousness (July 26) was also marked in Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka in India, with a Cuban festival in which optimism and enthusiasm for the historical date prevailed.
The occasion also served to condemn Washington’s hostile policy toward Cuba and to demand the release of The Cuban Five -René, Gerardo, Antonio, Fernando and Ramón- unjustly incarcerated in the United States for over 10 years now. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
