Raúl attends tribute to Juan Almeida
No one surrenders here!
YESTERDAY, representing the stage and visual arts, an outstanding group of artists and performers proclaimed the permanent validity of the historic phrase shouted by Juan Almeida shortly after the Granma yacht landing – "No one surrenders here!" – during a commemoration evening attended by President Raúl Castro.
The event, which took place at the Revolutionary Armed Forces’ Universal Hall, was a tribute to the Commander of the Revolution who died recently, to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of his birth.
Organized by the eminent artist Alexis Leyva Machado (Kcho), the painters Eduardo Roca (Choco), Roberto Fabelo, José Omar Torres, Ernesto Rancaño, Diana Balboa, Javier Guerra, Sándor González, Dausell Valdés, Cristian González del Río, Diana Almeida, Nelson Domínguez and Agustín Villafaña, designed and painted 12 enormous stars, allegorical pieces attesting to the hero’s participation in the liberation struggle and construction of a socialist society.
A photographic exhibition, with work by Liborio Noval, Roberto Salas, Raúl Abreu and Iván Soca provided evidence of his prolific career.
Alden Knight recited décimas and read out the glorious pages that Raúl, during his campaign diary from the days in the Sierra, dedicated to his dear comrade in the struggle.
Almeida’s music resonated throughout the evening, thanks to the Entrevoces choir, soprano Bárbara Llanes, and singer Lía and ended with the powerful charanguera of Elito Revé.
Finally, there was an emotional surprise: Juan Guillermo, Almeida’s son and perpetuator of his musical legacy, dedicated a son to his father.
Among those attending the evening were Commanders of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés and Guillermo García, FAR chiefs and officers and relatives of Almeida. (Cubaminrex
