Fidel and Raul Pay Last Respects to Major General Sio Wong
CUBA, February 13, 2010. Wreaths sent by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and President Raul Castro accompanied on Friday the funeral of Major General from the reserve (R) Moises Sio Wong at Havana’s Colon Cemetery.
The burial of the mortal remains of Sio Wong took place at the Pantheon of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), in a ceremony attended by Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes and Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Army Corps General Julio Casas, among other members of the Politburo of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC).
Also in the presence of Sio Wong’s relatives, top FAR officers and leaders from the Association of Cuban Combatants, Major General (R) Harry Villegas, vice president and executive secretary of that organization, recalled the days when young Sio Wong joined the Rebel Army at the Sierra Maestra Mountains.
Major General Villegas recalled that in 1958 Sio Wong was transferred to La Plata Command Headquarters and made reference to his participation in several combats.
Later on, he joined the vanguard squad of the Ciro Redondo Column 8, under the leadership of Commander Ernesto Che Guevara.
After the triumph of the Revolution he occupied several positions with the FAR as well as state responsibilities. He was a founder member of the PCC.
Quoted by ACN news agency Villegas concluded: “If we want to describe Sio Wong in a few words, we will say that he excelled for his spirit of self-sacrifice, his modesty and professionalism, and his in-depth analyses of things. His love for the Revolution and the FAR was endless.” (Cubaminrex- RHC)
