Labor and Trade Union Lawyers from Various Countries Meet in Havana.

CUBA, 17 March 2011.- The imminent challenges and prospects of labor law in times of economic crisis were the focus of debates of the 200 delegates from 16 nations that attended the 5th International Meeting of Labor and Trade Union Lawyers.

Participating in the event, which began on Monday and wound up on Wednesday at Havana’s Hotel Nacional de Cuba, were experts from Latin America, the United States, Spain and England.

Among the main topics were the social responsibility of the State and enterprises towards workers and labor health and safety, according to information provided to ACN by Antonio Raudilio Martin, president of the Organizing Committee.

Martin, who is also the vice-president of the American Association of Jurists, said that participants in the meeting exchanged their experiences on their performance “in defense of workers against the aggressiveness of capitalism.”

For her part, Lidia Guevara, general secretary of the Latin American Association of Labor Lawyers, pointed out that the struggle to achieve efficient productive employment “in which trade union rights are acknowledged” is one of the main challenges of professionals in this organization..

The impact in Latin America of the economic crisis –and particularly in the field of labor law- was another of the important topics under debate, said Argentinean lawyer Luis Enrique Ramirez.

Ramirez, who is also the vice-president of the Latin American Association of Labor Lawyers, one of the entities that sponsored the event, highlighted the deep reflections made on the issue.

Excelling in this regard were the lectures given by Mexican jurist Arturo Fernandez (The Global Economic Crisis: its Impact in the Continent. The Mexican Labor Reform”) and Brazilian Marco Antonio Villatore (The Right to Employment in Times of Crisis). (Cubaminrex-ACN)
