UNESCO Workshop on Patrimonial Safeguard in Cuba.
CUBA, March 30, 2010.- Experts and professionals of 10 countries from Latin America and the Caribbean are involved in a training workshop on the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage organized by UNESCO.
The meeting, taking place at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, aims to encourage greater cooperation among the member states of the Convention and to strengthen their capabilities to effectively implement the agreement, signed in 2003.
The Director of UNESCO Regional Culture Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, Herman van Hooff, said that nations face challenges to preserve their heritage, which are subjected to external pressures that threaten the self-defining character of the communities .
The director praised the region for its role in the development of the policies adopted by UNESCO for this purpose.
The President of the National Heritage Council in Cuba, Margarita Ruiz, emphasized the importance of these exchanges.
Organized by the UNESCO Section for Intangible Cultural Heritage with the support of the Cuban National Commission, the workshop will run until next Friday. (Cubaminrex-Prensa Latina)
