PAHO: Cuba Eliminates Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Syphilis

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES, December 2nd, 2011.- Cuba is one of the few countries in the western hemisphere that has eliminated  mother-to-child HIV and Syphilis transmission, according to a report from the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO). The other countries are United States, Canada, Antigua and Barbuda and Anguilla.

The Cuban state guarantees an improving quality of life for those infected with HIV/Aids, and there´s a political will, an organized community, a totally accesible health system  to achieve this purpose.

At the regional level, the reports states that there is a 15% transmission level from mother to child in Latin America and the Caribbean. Each year, around 5,000 children get infected with HIV in the American continent, most of them from their mothers.

AIDS  pandemic has become one of the most devastating health crisis in history. Since its outbreak, more than 25 million people has died and, even though the different efforts to prevent the infection, the number of cases reported overcome the international strategies to restrain it.
