Cuba to Denounce Before the UN Need of Lifting US Blockade

CUBA, September 16, 2009. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez announced the submission of a report entitled “Need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America on Cuba” to the UN General Assembly on October 28.

During a press conference on Wednesday in Havana, the diplomat pointed out that this will be the 18th consecutive year in which the UN makes a statement on “the criminal policy, intact since its implementation half a century ago.”

Rodriguez explained that the total cost for Cuba of this act of genocide policy is of over 236 billion dollars.

He added that despite the US people’s majority opposition to the blockade, the Obama Administration signed its continuity two days ago, for reasons of “national interest.”

The blockade is ethically unacceptable and a failed and obsolete policy, which has been repeatedly condemned the world over and by different organizations, as proved by the 185 votes in favor –and only three against, including the US- of the resolution presented by the island in 2008 before the UN General Assembly, stressed the Cuban Minister.

Once again, Cuba requests the international community to support its resolution, in which it demands the immediate and unconditional cessation of this criminal policy, which has been the island’s main obstacle for its social and economic development, stressed Rodriguez.

The Cuban FM pointed out that the measures president Obama spoke about on April 13 with regard to the links of Cubans living in the US with their relatives on the island, like trips and remittances, are limited and insufficient.

As part of the criminal blockade, the US government prohibits the export of goods and services both ways, including medicaments and health technologies to save lives, and these restrictions are applicable to third countries trying to sell items with US components to Cuba, recalled the FM.

Lastly, Rodriguez ratified the willingness of the Cuban people and government to continue with their Revolution, despite the US blockade, the world economic crisis, and climate change. (Cubaminrex - ACN)
