Raul Attends Gala to Mark 50th Anniversary of the UNEAC.
CUBA, 21 August 2011.- Writer Miguel Barnet, President of the Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) spoke briefly at Havana's Grand Theater about the half a century of existence of this organization, while addressing participants in the commemorative gala held on the occasion on Saturday night, which was attended by President Raul Castro.
Barnet recalled that the UNEAC was created during the historic meeting between artists and writers and Cuban Revolution Leader Fidel Castro, held at the National Library in 1961 and known as Palabras a los Intelectuales (Words to Intellectuals).
That's how the organization that opened a new way in Cuban culture, promoted creativity and encouraged the unitary, coherent and dynamic spirit between writers and artists was born, he said.
Also attending the gala were Politburo members Esteban Lazo, Marino Murillo and Lazara Mercedes Lopez, as well as the presidents of the UNEAC of all Cuban provinces.
The gala, under the general direction of Alfonso Menendez, included Spanish, folk, country music and contemporary dance, music and poetry. Singer Miriam Ramos and young talented artists performed classic pieces like Quiéreme mucho and El breve espacio en que no estás; and Vocal Universo, Quirino con su tre'; Milagros de los Angeles Soto sang the Romance of Maria la O; and, from a balcony, flutist Niurka Gonzalez interpreted Mujer Bayamesa.
