UN Population Fund Extols Cuba’s Social Policy.
CUBA, July 7, 2011.- The international coordinator of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Cuba, Jesus Robles, extolled Cuba’s social policy in terms of the wellbeing of the population and their rights.
Cuba has developed advanced social programs in the fields of health and education, and has tried to meet the needs of the population, Robles said during a press conference in Havana, on the occasion of the World Population Day, on July 11.
Robles noted that Cuba’s achievements confirm that as long as there is political will, the limitations of underdeveloped economies not necessarily represent an obstacle to show satisfactory socio-demographic rates.
The UN representative affirmed that Cuba is an example in this field, in this world seriously affected by poverty, hunger, diseases, and other challenges that demand suitable social policies in view that the world population is expected to grow up to seven billion people in October.
He announced that the World Population Day this year will be dedicated to the youth as a stronghold for development.
The Center on Demographic Studies, the Young Communist League and other institutions made known the program of activities to mark this date, which will take place in Old Havana, during the press conference.
The program includes projects, lectures on the youth in the present Cuban context, as well as a concert by song-writer and singer David Torrens. (Cubaminrex-ACN)
