VP Fernandez: Cubans Fought Bravely against the Mercenaries. 

CUBA, April 3, 2011.- Cuba fought with courage and crave for victory until defeating the 1961 mercenary aggression through Playa Giron, said Council of Ministers Vice President Jose Ramon Fernandez, participant in the event.

  The United States government masterminded and financed the invasion through the "Bay of Pigs", in Matanzas Province, SW Cuba, to destroy the Revolution. The invaders were heavily armed and our people were forced to fight hard for victory, the Brig. Gen. told the national TV.

Fernandez noted that the enemy underestimated Revolution leader Fidel Castro and his people willing to defend the freedom they enjoyed from the 1st of January, 1959.

The combatants were very proud of the bold, sleepless three days and two nights fight until they vanquished the enemy, making 1,197 prisoners.

Playa Giron was a feat; it brought a victory that nurtured confidence among the Cuban people and inflicted the US imperialism its first defeat in America. (Cubaminrex-Prensa Latina)
