Confederation of Cuban Workers Issues Call for May Day Nationwide Celebrations.
CUBA, April 20th, 2011.- The Confederation of Cuban Workers (CTC) issued a call on Tuesday urging all Cuban workers and revolutionaries to participate in the traditional parades to mark International Workers’ Day on May 1 all across the country.
The General Secretary of the CTC, Salvador Valdes Mesa, said during a press conference in Havana that this year’s celebrations will serve to pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Socialist character of the Cuban Revolution and also of the victory over the US-backed mercenary invasion of Bay of Pigs in 1961.
Valdes affirmed that, as it has become a tradition, Havana’s Revolution Square will host the parade in the Cuban capital, and he added that every municipality and province will hold special celebrations on that date.
The CTC leader pointed out that this year marks the centennial of the birthday of three important Cuban trade union leaders: Lazaro Peña, Jesus Menendez, and Jose Maria Perez.
He noted that, on May Day, the Cuban people will once again show their support of the Revolution and of the current process to update the Cuban economic model.
Valdes said the occasion will be a good opportunity to demand the immediate release of the five Cuban antiterrorists who remain unjustly imprisoned in the U.S. since 1998.
“Unity, productivity, and efficiency” will be the main slogan of this year’s International Worker’s Day.
