Cuban Cooperation Workers Awarded Internationalist Medal.

CUBA, June 25, 2011.- The National Secretariat of the Union of Health Workers (SNTS by its Spanish acronym) and the Ministry of Health awarded the Medal of Internationalist Workers to outstanding Cuban cooperants.

The awards were presented by Maria Isabel Martinez, secretary general of the SNTS, at the close of the Day of Tribute to the Internationalist Workers, which took place from June 14 to coincide with the birthday of Antonio Maceo and Che Guevara and ended on Friday.

Dr. Ines de las Mercedes Martin was awarded in this ceremony for her work as a specialist in General Medicine and Master of Comprehensive Care for Children, and the control of economic activity. She was also chief of mission in Bolivia and her work was described as exceptionally successful.

IT specialist Marlen Orta Pina was another of the health professionals whose work was recognized. She worked in Bolivia, where she earned recognition as a vanguard, and Dr. Milvia Ramirez, who served in Venezuela as first-degree specialist in General Medicine (MGI) and Hygiene and Epidemiology.

This is the first time this event is held, organized by the union sector, and included scientific meetings in several Cuban provinces, where cooperation workers spoke of their experiences in the Health Comprehensive Program, the Henry Reeve International Contingent and other forms of cooperation.

Across the island, doctors introduced 1,267 papers, of which 39 were selected, and at the close of the meeting 13 were presented.

Currently, more than 40,000 Cubans are working in 68 nations, out of which over 16,000 are doctors, said Marcia Cobas, Deputy Minister of Public Health. (Cubaminrex-ACN)
