The Ministry of Basic Industry

Is the estate organization that is in charge of three important sectors of the Cuban economy.

• Energy

• Geology and mining

• Basic chemistry

For its management, It is divided into eight Trusts of Enterprises that are in charge of the following tasks:

• Production

• Research

• Projects

• Maintenance

• Construction

• Internal Commercialization

• Importation Of Raw Materials And Components

• Exportation Of Finished Products

During 35 working years the Ministry has created an important industrial base and a backing infrastructure, as well as a high specializing level for its labor force.

The Energy Sector: It comprises all the activities related to oil and electricity, and it is up to the present organized into two solid organizations:

• Cubapetróleo

• The Electric Trust

Cubapetróleo: It Is The Cuban Estate Oil Company, In Charge Of The Following Activities:

• Prospecting

• Exploration

• Refining

• Commercialization

It is a full member of ARPEL and maintains close relations with OLADE and UNIDO.

It disposes of an integral system of specialized enterprises, which comprises:

Three enterprises in charge of the oilwell drilling and extraction

Four oil refineries

Territorial distribution enterprises

National enterprise of lubricants, cubalub

Prospecting and exploration: The main characteristics of the Cuban hydrocarbons potential are determined by update researches that include more than 70,000 km ² onshore and 70,000 km ² offshore. Twenty oilfields with a wide range of ° API and a current production of 37,000 b/d. Two methods are used for its operation:

Capital association to increase production in the existing oilfields (Increasing Production Contracts).

Risk exploration contracts, for which the country has been divided into 45 blocks: 35 onshore and 10 offshore (Production Sharing Contract).

Refining - Commercialization: For the fulfillment of its operations it has:

Four refineries with a total capacity of 5,6 M/t per year.

A supertankers base for oil reception that accept tankers with a dead weight up to
150 000 t., in Matanzas province, and it is connected to Cienfuegos refinery by means of a pipeline of 187 km, located in the central-south part of the island.

A national reception and distribution system.

The Electricity Trust: It is a Public Service Enterprise that generates, transmits, distributes and commercializes the electric power to satisfy all its clients expectations about the electric service. The electrification level throughout the whole country is of a 95% with more than 2,6 million clients.

For its operation it has an installed capacity of 3267 MW, in 17 thermoelectric power plants properly distributed throughout the country with the following distribution and a transmission networks from the generation plants to each one of its customers:

6816 KM for transmission to 220 and 110
9224 KM for sub-transmission to 33 kV
33400 KM of primary distribution
26923 of secondary distribution
Substation for transmission and sub-transmission
98 KM of 220 and 110 KV
2064 KM of 33 KV
The country has begun a wide modernization program for the existing thermoelectric power plants with the purpose to upgrade them with up to date technologies, to achieve a major availability in the exploitation, as well as to decrease its specific oil rates of consumption for generated kWh and a major use of the national crude.

Among some other electricity generation sources is the possibility of co-generation in sugar mills, using husk and straw from the sugar cane.

The Mining and Geologist Sector: It is the Cuban estate entity in charge of the prospecting, exploration and exploitation of metallic and non-metallic minerals with the exception of the nickel, operating in the risk form with foreign firms, focusing on very prospective areas like gold and silver.

In the last 35 years it has carried out an intense program of geological mapping, geochemical and geophysical researches, with the following results:

Geological survey 1: 50 000 and 1: 10 000 from the 50% of the territory, where are located the most prospective zones.
100% of the projecting territory and with aerogravimetic, aerogamma –espectrometric and aeromagnetic surveys.
It has been established 37 regions of the most prospective ones for the discovery of metallic minerals, equivalent to 40 000 km that represents the 35% of the national territory.

Referring to non-metallics, the country has big zeolite deposits in the order of 500 million tones reserves, it also has highly pure calcium carbonate deposit, suitable for its production in a micronized way for the paper, plastics and paint industries.

The Nickel Trust: Is a Cuban estate entity that deals with the nickel and cobalt exploitation and processing from lateritic minerals, by means of a solid organization with more than 50 years of experience. Cuba has one of the major nickel and cobalt reserves of the world located in the eastern part of the country with proven reserves of 800 million tons and probable reserves of 2000 million tons. The cobalt reserves are approximately the 26% of the world reserves, being the second in the whole world. This organization has a potential capacity of 70,000 tons per year for the nickel processing distributed into three producing plants.

The Sector of the Basic Chemistry: It includes a wide range of productions distributed into four Cuban estate organizations:

The Chemical Trust: It comprises fertilizers productions, industrial gases, paints, staple rayon fiber, chemical productions from electrolysis, plague killers, plastic bags and reinforced plastics productions.

Vidrieras Caribe: It takes in glass packing productions, ornamental and domestic glass articles, glass articles for hotels and laboratories.

The Paper Trust: It includes printing and writing paper productions, wrapping paper, grayboard, non-coated cardboard, liner board, corrugating medium, toilet paper, copybooks and notebooks, eggs trays, corrugated cardboard boxes, multiwall paper bags, simple paper bags, and asphalt fiber tiles.

The Poligom Industries: It takes in tires and inner tubes productions, tires retreading, rubber foot-wear, and a large variety of technical rubber articles for different economic sectors as the chemical, sugar, food, poligraphic, pharmacist, domestic use and car industries.
