Outcome of Cuban Sciences Rising

Almost in the end of 2003, 50 research projects had been concluded and 149 new results have been obtained in the domestic scientific-technical programs, result of the work developed by our scientific community –asserted in an exclusive to Cubasi Doctor in Sciences Vito Quevedo Rodríguez, Technology Director and Innovation at the Ministry of Sciences, Technology and Environment in the Island.

At present more than 220 research centers, development areas, scientific-technical services centers are working in Cuba and there are 115 leading centers where the 70% of Cuban specialists are grouped.

Among the main results outstand the biotechnological and medical products as well as genetic drugs coming mainly from the centers of the West Scientific Pole and some others scattered in the country that work with this approach.

The research done about the capacities, catalogued as a world result; the vaccine against the Hemophilus influenzae B, the only in the world obtained from synthetic antigens and the conferring of the register to obtain the vaccine against hepatitis B, with the reduction of its dosage with a great economic impact, are some of the most important achievements of the specialists of the Island.

To all this it is added the introduction of the vaccine against the typhus and the progress in the development of others against cholera and cancer. Besides, the register of new biotechnical products have been obtained, and the files of two natural and six formulations of generic drugs of elevated value.

Clinical essays of monoclonal antibodies and the duty free application of antiretroviral therapy in HIV positive patients something which prolongs the life expectancy in this kind of patients can also be qualified as successful.

Some attention deserve the organic products, that don’t implicate chemical and don’t require of much science and technological innovation like organic sugar that is produced in Villa Clara, the organic coffee, ecologic honey and cocoa, that are grown in Guantánamo and Sancti Spíritus.

To this we must add other products like the vitrofural and other traditional ones like tobacco, where the science added valued is to be summed up, also the white dinker and the nickel plus cobalt.
