Zero Infant Mortality Rate in 25 of Cuba's Municipalities

CUBA, January 5, 2007.- Twenty-five of Cuba's 126 municipalities reported a zero infant mortality rate in 2006.

The National Statistics Department of the Ministry of Health, which previously announced the national infant mortality rate of 5.3 per one thousand live births, revealed that 25 municipalities have a population of over 800,000 inhabitants each.

According to the same source, the western province of Matanzas registered the best results with 6 of its 14 municipalities reporting no deaths among children under 1 year of age last year.

In Cuba, children are also protected from 13 preventable diseases, through immunization programs which have the benefits of a vaccines created by Cuban scientists.
