Cuban Progress in Cornea Transplants

CUBA, January 14, 2008.-  Cuba did 557 cornea transplants in 2007, 107 more than in 2006, and expects to extend this type or surgery to several provinces.

In declarations published by Trabajadores newspaper  Elizabeth Escalona Leyva, chief of the cornea services at the Ophthalmology National institute Ramon Pando Ferrer, highlighted the importance of having on the island a national coordinating network.

She said that Ramon Pando Ferrer assumed 90 percent of the surgeries (433 in 2007) and also Hermanos Ameijeiras and Calixto Garcia hospitals, as well as the Center of Medical Surgery Research and others from Camaguey and Cienfuegos. (Cubaminrex-PL)
